Emojis as Emotional Support in Job Postings

Emojis in job postings? Is that even possible? And how do potential applicants react to this type of communication?

Emojis play a major role in our communication these days—whether on WhatsApp, Facebook, or Instagram. Hardly a sentence is posted or written without adding a fitting emoji at the end to convey the tone of the text.

In the following article, the team at SEO for Jobs explores the potential benefits of emojis in candidate recruitment and discusses the point at which too many emojis can make the whole thing come across as unprofessional. Until now, most providers haven’t allowed users to add emojis to job postings, but this is different with Google for Jobs if you’ve selected SEO for Jobs as your provider.

What Are Emojis?

Of course, we must first clarify the question: What are emojis, and what are they used for? Emojis are small graphic elements—usually in the form of emotive faces—that can be added to text or a message. These days, however, they’re no longer just smiling emojis—they also include, for example, animals, objects, and other little images that make text more vivid.

What are the benefits of emojis?

These small images, primarily intended to convey emotions and the tone of a text, provide emotional reinforcement for the sender’s message. The visual elements give the recipient an immediate sense of the message’s intended direction. Furthermore, emojis are frequently used to clearly structure text. Small colored elements that stand out from the text make paragraphs much easier to identify. Of course, job postings don’t convey a vast array of different emotions, but smiling or cheerful emojis can leave a positive impression (e.g., 🤗). Google for Jobs offers very few design options, which makes emojis a natural choice for visually enhancing job postings. And as mentioned earlier, in addition to face emojis, objects can also be included. Companies can take advantage of this to make their job postings more vivid and clarify the described scope of work (for example, you could use this emoji 🌍 if the company wants to position itself as an international organization). Emojis immediately catch the eye, helping the job posting stand out from the competition. Another advantage—especially on Google for Jobs—is that young people in particular, who are familiar with social media and therefore with emojis, often start their job search on Google. Companies could thus use this to capture the attention of this demographic and appeal to young applicants with the help of emojis.

However, caution should be exercised when using emojis, especially in job postings. A few well-placed emojis can grab an applicant’s attention. But if too many emojis are combined, the text can just as quickly come across as unreadable and unprofessional.

Here are two examples of an identical job posting—one without emojis and one with:

Job postings that include emojis can help attract more attention from applicants.

How can emojis be used?

In the list view on Google for Jobs, emojis can help the job posting immediately attract more attention and thus stand out from the competition. This can be achieved, for example, with the 🔥 or 🛑 emojis. The various bullet-point emojis can also be very useful, since Google for Jobs otherwise offers few to no design options for displaying bullet points or groupings. Emojis such as ✔️ and ✅ could be used for this purpose.

How can I add emojis to my job posting?

If you’ve chosen SEO for Jobs as your provider, you can add emojis to your job postings, which will then appear on Google for Jobs.

This can be done in the following two ways:

  1. If you’re working on a desktop, you can simply copy the emojis from a source like Google and paste them into the SEO for Jobs tool.

  2. If you’re using a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet, the emojis are usually already built into the keyboard, so you can simply select them.

Here is a list of commonly used and useful emojis that you can easily copy:

🔥 🛑 ✅ ✔️ 😊 😄 😘 😁 👌 💬 👏 🤝 ❤️ 🎓 📧

Conclusion

With SEO for Jobs, you can now enhance your job postings on Google for Jobs with emojis, making your text more engaging and personal. Carefully selected visual elements can enhance the posting and help attract more applicants.
