Google for Jobs in Detail

Google Job Box, SERP, logo, and Apply button—there are many terms and features related to Google for Jobs. On this page, you’ll learn in detail what each of these terms means. Here, you can quickly look up terms or discover new features of Google for Jobs that you may not be familiar with yet.

Google Job Box

The Google Job Box appears on the first SERP (search results page) in standard Google Search. It’s usually displayed as the first organic search result. However, the Jobbox only appears when Google recognizes that the search is for a job. For example, search queries such as “medical assistant job” will trigger the Google Jobbox to appear.

You can recognize the Google Jobbox by the blue label that says“Job Listings”and the phrase“near …”.

However, the Google Job Box is merely the entry point to Google for Jobs and offers only limited functionality. For example, it displays only three jobs and a limited set of filter options. The full job search can be accessed by clicking on the blue-highlighted heading.

Google for Jobs

Google for Jobs opens with all its features only after you click on the Google Job Box. It’s interesting to note that there’s no direct link to open Google for Jobs; you always have to go through the regular web search. The job search engine is divided into the following sections:

  • Free-text search

  • Filters

  • Job List

  • Job Details

Free-text job search

On Google for Jobs, you can search for relevant job postings using a free-text search. To do this, use the search bar at the very top of the page. One unique feature is that Google automatically bases the search on your current region. This is indicated by the text in lowercase letters below the search bar—in this case, “Schleswig-Holstein.” Google determines your current location based on your IP address, for example.

If Google fails to recognize the correct location, or if you want to search specifically in a different location, you can simply include a location in the free-text search, such as “medical assistant job Hamburg.” Here, too, Google will automatically recognize that you’re looking for jobs near Hamburg.

Filters

In addition to the free-text search, you can further narrow down the search results using filters. The following filters are available:

  • Location

  • Date Posted

  • Type

  • Employer

The location filter allows you to limit the results to either a radius or specific cities. The selection of cities in the filter is dynamic and depends on the search query as well as the filters already applied.

The date filter lets you sort job postings by recency. This allows applicants to see which positions were just posted and gives them a good chance of being among the first to apply.

The "Type" filter (employment type) allows you to easily filter job listings by specific employment types. Typical filters here include part-time or full-time jobs, but you can also filter by internships. If there are no suitable listings in the current search results, the filters are deactivated.

Job List

On Google for Jobs, the job list is displayed below the filters on the left-hand side. It lists all job postings that match the current search (free-text search including filters).

The job list clearly displays the most important information about the job postings.

It includes

  • Logo or placeholder for the company’s logo

  • Company name

  • Location

  • Source of the job posting

  • Age of the job posting

  • Type of employment

  • Salary

In some cases, information is only displayed if it has been entered. This applies to the type of employment and the salary.

Scrolling to the bottom will load additional matching jobs. Clicking on a job listing in the list will display further details about the job on the right-hand side.

Job Details Page

The Job Details page displays detailed information about the selected job listing. It’s worth noting that all relevant information is displayed directly on Google for Jobs, so the user doesn’t have to leave Google.

The page is structured as follows:

  • Title

  • Save and Share Button

  • Logo

  • Company Name

  • Location

  • Apply Buttons

  • Additional Information

  • Job Description

  • Reviews

  • Map with Directions

  • Related Links

The title, company name, logo, location, and additional information ( age of the job posting, salary, employment type) are identical to the information in the job list.

The “Apply” buttons (also known as the Google for Jobs Apply button ) are located on the details page below the basic information. There is always at least one button there, but sometimes there are several. This depends on the sources through which the job posting was submitted to Google.

The job description consists of plain text. Currently, Google allows virtually no formatting options for job postings. Only paragraphs and bullet points are permitted.

After the text-based job description, additional optional elements are displayed. If Google has reviews available for the company that posted the job listing and the AI (Artificial Intelligence) has correctly established the connection, those reviews will also be displayed.

If a correct address is provided for a job posting, the details view also displays a map showing the location or work site. If you’re signed in with a Google Account and have shared or entered your current location there, the distance and travel time to the employer are also displayed.

If the address is entered correctly, Google for Jobs displays a map.

Finally, additional links to the employer are sometimes listed. Whether links are displayed there—and which ones—also depends on Google’s AI. The following types are possible

  • Link to the website

  • Link to additional job postings from the company

  • Web search results for the company

Logo / Company logo

A fundamental characteristic of Google is the consistency of its search results. This applies to both web search and Google Jobs. The rationale behind this is that results should be comparable, and that content—not visual appeal—is what matters. As a result, the company logo on Google for Jobs is essentially the only way to stand out.

The logo is displayed in both the list view and the detail view. It’s important to note that the logo is displayed very small. Logos with too many details are barely legible. We recommend using a simplified version of the logo (e.g., the favicon)—preferably without text.

The logo will be displayed in the list and in the details view on Google for Jobs.

If no logo is uploaded for a job posting, Google generates a placeholder. This is a colored square featuring the company’s first letter. Another reason the logo might not appear is that Google has not yet indexed it or linked it to the company. For more information on how to upload a logo, see the Google for Jobs guide. Alternatively, you can easily manage your job postings and their corresponding logos using our editor.

If no logo has been uploaded, or if the Google logo has not been linked, a placeholder will be displayed.

Sources

Google constantly scans the internet for new job postings. (Note: Specific requirements must be met for Google to recognize a job posting. Learn more in the guide or use a specialized service provider for Google for Jobs.)

When a new job posting is found, it is added to the Google Index and can be found via Google for Jobs. Clicking the “Apply” button takes a visitor to the source where Google found the job posting.

Google may find a job posting across multiple sources. This is the case, for example, when the job posting is listed on different job portals. If this is the case, multiple “Apply” buttons linking to the sources will be displayed.

It’s important to note that the source also determines the button’s label. For example, if your job posting was found on Xing or LinkedIn, the button will be labeled “Apply on: Xing.” Ideally, the “Apply” button should be labeled with the company name.
