Salina Utility Worker I

Salina Utility Worker I – Join the Team Keeping Salina Running Smoothly!

Hey there! Are you looking for a role where you can roll up your sleeves, make a difference in your community, and maybe even get a little dirt under your nails? The City of Salina is on the lookout for a Utility Worker I to help us keep our water distribution and wastewater systems in tip-top shape. This isn’t just any job—it’s about ensuring clean water flows where it should and making sure everything runs like clockwork. (Spoiler: It’s kind of important!)

So, What’s the Gig?

As a Utility Worker I, you’ll be part plumber, part maintenance guru, and all-around problem solver. You’ll tackle things like installing pipes, fixing valves that refuse to cooperate, maintaining fire hydrants (because they’re not just there for show), dabbling in some electrical tasks—and yes—there may be some snow shoveling or lawn mowing thrown into the mix. Think of it as an adventure with tools.

Here’s what we’d love for you to do:

  • Install, repair, clean up after (and generally boss around) water/wastewater pipelines.

  • Fix valves and manholes—because no one likes broken ones.

  • Work on service lines—you’re basically a backstage hero for Salina's waterworks.

  • Keep pumps and motors humming along happily.

  • Get hands-on with fire hydrants—installing or repairing them so they’re ready when needed.

  • Perform small electrical/mechanical fixes without breaking a sweat.

  • Take care of tasks like cleaning up work areas or mowing grass (trust us; variety keeps things interesting).

  • Set up traffic signs/barricades because safety first!

  • Dive into confined spaces from time to time (safely—we’ve got gear for that).

Bonus Skill: You’ll also log work orders using data entry tools because even superheroes need paperwork.

What We’re Looking For:

Are you someone who prefers solving problems instead of sitting at a desk all day? Here’s what we hope describes you:

Education & Experience

  • You’ve got at least a high school diploma or GED, which means you're good at learning stuff quickly.

  • Got 2 years’ experience with utility construction/plumbing/maintenance? Even better! If you've worked with mechanical systems before—it'll feel like home here.

Other Must-Haves

  • A valid Kansas driver’s license so you can zip around town when duty calls.

  • Be within 40 minutes’ response time from Salina because emergencies don’t wait!

What's In It For You?

Let us sweeten the pot:
💰 Starting Pay: $24.47–$25.69/hr ($50k–53k/year).
🌙 Night Owls Rejoice: An extra $1.50/hour if you're working between 6 PM–6 AM!

🕒 Time Off :
• Start with 48 hours vacation right away, earn another 48 hours during year one = 96 total.
• Sick days? Yep—96 hours in year one too!

Add health benefits + retirement perks + being part of something bigger than yourself = pretty awesome deal.

Ready to Jump In?
If this sounds like your kind of thing—and you're ready to join our tight-knit crew—we want YOU on our team! Apply now before this opportunity passes by faster than rush hour traffic through downtown Salina.

Looking forward to meeting ya, The City of Salina
