Senior Substation Engineer / Technologist (HV) Employment Type: Permanent Industry: Power Utilities Salary: Highly Competitive (Senior Level) Location: Roodepoort / Cape Town / Durban Location flexibility based on project requirements Role Overview A leading engineering organisation operating within the power utilities sector is seeking a Senior Substation Engineer / Senior Technologist (HV) to take full technical ownership of high-voltage substation projects across utility-scale infrastructure. This is a senior, KPI-driven role intended for professionals with extensive experience in HV substation design, engineering delivery, and utility compliance. The successful candidate will lead substation planning and design activities while providing technical oversight across multiple projects. Key Responsibilities & Performance Indicators The role will be measured against the following role-critical KPIs : End-to-end planning and design of HV substations (132kV – 765kV) Delivery of accurate, compliant substation layouts, drawings, and full design packages Selection, specification, and technical evaluation of primary plant equipment Preparation of electrical calculations, studies, and supporting technical documentation Compliance with local, international, and client engineering standards On-time delivery of multiple concurrent substation projects Technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance of junior engineers and designers Review of contractor designs and resolution of technical queries Engineering support during construction, FAT, SAT, commissioning, and final handover Minimum Requirements (Non-Negotiable) Candidates must meet one of the following qualification criteria: BSc Eng / BEng (Electrical) with a minimum of 7 years post-qualification experience OR BTech (Electrical) with a minimum of 10 years post-qualification engineering experience Additional mandatory requirements: Professional registration with ECSA (Engineer or Engineering Technologist) 7–10 years experience in HV transmission and distribution projects Proven experience in power utility substation projects Eskom transmission and/or distribution experience is essential Strong working knowledge of Bentley MicroStation Valid South African drivers licence Own reliable transport Only candidates who meet the essential requirements will be considered.
