The Role
We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (Adult) to join the Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC) team. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary group delivering high-quality Primary Health Care (PHC) services, Occupational Health, and Health Promotion to Defence Medical Services (DMS) personnel.
You will be responsible to the Senior Medical Officer / Lead Clinician / Senior Nurse and will provide routine clinics and nurse-led care to meet the needs of the entitled Population at Risk (PAR). This includes planning, delivering, and evaluating patient care, contributing to service development, and ensuring the highest standards of safety and governance.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver nurse-led clinics, assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating care.
Support the development and implementation of care programmes and service delivery.
Use clinical information systems to support audits and service evaluations.
Communicate effectively with senior clinicians, outside agencies, and other disciplines.
Where required, co-ordinate and supervise other nurses/untrained staff, supporting their professional development.
Maintain up-to-date mandatory training in line with DPHC requirements.
Issue medications under Patient Group Directives (PGDs) and Patient Specific Directions (PSDs) when trained and deemed competent.
Promote patient safety and contribute to healthcare governance activities.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
Registered Nurse (Adult), Level 1 with the NMC, holding a valid PIN with no restrictions.
Current medical indemnity insurance.
Minimum of two years’ post-registration PHC experience.
Minimum of one year’s experience at Band 6 or above in PHC (within the last three years).
Up-to-date training and certification in:
Basic Life Support (BLS), Anaphylaxis, AED, and Infection Prevention & Control (IPC).
Immunisation & Vaccination Foundation Training (Public Health England standards) with current certification or signed competency evidence.
Annual update in Immunisation & Vaccination (including children if applicable).
Evidence of recent (within last three years) training/competence in:
Venepuncture
Travel Health
Minor Injuries and Illness
Chronic Disease Management (Asthma, COPD, CHD, Diabetes, CVD, Hypothyroid)
Evaluation of the deteriorating patient (e.g., MEWS)
Child Health in Primary Care (where applicable)
Cervical Cytology (where required)
Mentorship, Clinical Supervision, or equivalent teaching/assessment qualifications
Safeguarding Children & Young People and Safeguarding Adults (Level 3).
