PRIMARY FUNCTION
Phlebotomist is predominantly responsible to obtain blood samples from patients in the hospital and clinic environment. Also assists with other basic laboratory functions as requested or assigned to ensure a safe, pleasant experience for patients.
Complies with department and organization-wide policies, Critical Access Hospital requirements, Safety and Infection Control, and all Federal and State of Colorado regulations related to the performance of Keefe Memorial Hospital operations and requirements of the compliance program.
SIGNIFICANT DUTIES
- Obtain blood specimens by capillary puncture or venipuncture using appropriate technique.
- Correctly identifies patient per written protocol and properly labels specimens accurately and completely, while maintaining the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test being performed.
- Exercises judgment in determining work priority. Interacts with hospital and clinic to ascertain critical priorities and verify discrepancies.
- Disposes of contaminated lab supplies and handles all lab specimens regarding potential health hazards according to written procedures.
- Receives laboratory specimens, orders tests, processes specimens using the centrifuge.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Utilizes proper body mechanics, transfer/lifting techniques and appropriate equipment to minimize fall risk to patient and injury to self.
